Critical Establishments

South Africa

Berapa harga petrol kat sini?

Aku jengok ke luar van bila on the way ke Engen Refinery, mencari-cari petrol station.

Berapa?

SA Rand 8.67 per litre. Lebih kurang RM 3.60. Haha ni kalau harga kat Malaysia pengsan semua orang!

Baru balik ke hotel lepas satu hari buat audit kat refinery.

Apasal hotel kami gelap gelita? Power blackout ke?

Kami inquire kat receptionist.

Rupanya kat negara diorang ada power shedding! Hehe, ingatkan kat plant kami je ada steam shedding. At certain times of the day, when demand of power exceeds supply, diorg akan cut off supply from some power users.

“Then who gets the power?” kami tanya.

Critical establishments, such as the hospital…” explain perempuan kat reception tu. Dan dlm hati aku sambung: “… dan agaknya oil refineries, top government offices…”

Oh. And we made our way to our rooms. Along the dark, dark corridor.

Tak tau nak buat apa kat bilik aku dlm keadaan takde power, aku pegi lepak kat lobby hotel, yg masih ada some light sebelum masuk maghrib.

Across the road, aku tengok Uhmlanga Ridge Shopping Complex is all lighted and alive.

Ah, rupanya kat situ ada power. Baru aku tahu, shopping complex adalah termasuk dlm ‘critical establishments‘.

Wonder what else is considered ‘critical’.
